We worked with the Intel Drone Team, XR Media Group, Shape Immersive, and the International Olympic Committee to bring the 2020 Youth Olympics into Augmented Reality. Featuring exclusive immersive content shot by the athletes on their event grounds, and real-time rankings updated as each event completed, this app was available on iOS & Android for the 2020 Youth Olympics. Nominated for an Emmy.
Using a unique combination of 3D photogrammetry, modelling, and 3D interface design we created a “3D model as interface” concept for the Olympics. Existing almost fully within a “camera” view, we had to reconsider mobile UX tropes for this novel interface and approach. This meant lots of usability testing. Considering this was a 1st-time experience with AR for many viewers, we took extra care in crafting an intuitive and educational onboarding flow.
The year after we launched the first Olympics AR experience on mobile we were nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Interactive Experience in Event Coverage. We were beaten by the NBA. We DID win in the same category the year prior for our Red Bull Rampage experience, but that’s a different case study.

Though the project was well-received, it was just a pilot leading to the Tokyo 2020 version of the application, which was postponed due to the COVID pandemic.
